The column is an essential building structure, and it is a load-bearing structure. Concrete columns are always made from RCC concrete and steel bars are used in RCC concrete. To estimate the construction cost of a column, you have to know how to calculate steel quantity for a column. Because different storey buildings have different sizes of columns and the required steel quantity is not the same in every column. If you want to know column size for 1 to 5 storey buildings then you read our previous article.
Steel quantity for a column
To calculate steel quantity for a column first of all we have to measure the column dimensions. Then we have to calculate column volume. After that we have to multiply by 2.5% and the density of steel in the the volume of the column.
Here we are multiply by 2.5% because 2.5 % steel needed for the column according to the thumb rule and we are multiplying by steel density just because we want our answer in kg.
Lets understand it by an examle.
Lets assume we have a 1 meter feet long column and its width and depth are 0.381 m – 0.381 feet respectly.
Density of steel = 7850 kg/m3
Now we we calculate volume of column = length × width × depth
= 1 × 0.381 × 0.381
= 0.145 cubic meter.
Now we will find how to calculate steel quantity in a column. To calculate steel quantity in a column we have to multiply by 2.5% and denstiy of steel in column volume.
Steel quantity in a column = 2.5% × column volume × density of steel
= 2.5/100 (0.145 × 7850 kg/m3)
= 0.025 × 1138 = 28.456 kg.

Conclusion
In this article we learned how to calculate steel quantity in a column. To calculate steel quantity in the column first we have to calculate the column volume. After that multiply by 2.5% and steel density in the column volume. After doing all above calculation you will get steel quantity for column in kg.
