How much Cement, Sand, and aggregate required for 1m3 M20 grade concrete

Concrete is available in different grades like M7.5, M10, M15, M20, M25, and design mix. But M20-grade concrete is the most commonly used concrete. Because M20 grade concrete is used in RCC structures, columns, beams, slabs, etc. And M20-grade concrete is most suitable for this type of structure. Therefore it is important to know how much cement, sand, and aggregate required for 1m3 M20 grade concrete.

Cement, sand, and aggregate for M20 grade concrete

Cement, sand, and aggregate required for 1 cum of M20 grade concrete

Every grade of concrete has a different mix ratio. So cement, sand, and aggregate quantity are different in every grade of concrete. But today we will know the required quantity of cement, sand, and aggregate for 1 cubic meter of M20 concrete and we will also know how can calculate it. If you want to know how much cement, sand, and aggregate required for M15-grade concrete you can read our previous article.

Cement required for 1 cubic meter of M20 grade concrete

As we know the mix ratio of M20 concrete is 1:1.5:3. In which 1 part is cement, 1.5 part is sand, and 3 parts is aggregate.

So, cement part in the mix = 1/(sum of total proportion)
= 1/(1+1.5+3) = 1/5.5.

Now we will find dry volume of concrete.

To find the dry volume of concrete we have to multiply in volume by 1.54 in the concrete volume. Because the dry volume of concrete is always 54% more than the wet volume of concrete.

Dry volume of concrete = total volume × 1.54
= 1m3 × 1.54 = 1.54m3.

The volume of cement = Cement part in M20 grade concrete mix × 1.54m3.
= 1/5.5 × 1.54m3.
= 0.181 × 1.54m3 = 0.28m3.

Now before calculating cement quantity in 1 cubic meter of M20 grade concrete. We have to calculate the volume of 1 bag of cement and 1 bag of cement contains 50 kg of cement.

We know the density of cement is 1440 kg/m2.

So, the volume of 1 bag of cement = 1 bag of cement weight ÷ density of cement.
= 50 ÷ 1440 = 0.0347m3.

The volume of 1 bag of cement is 0.0347m3.

Now, the quantity of cement for 1 cubic meter of M20 grade Concrete = total volume of cement ÷ volume of 1 bag of cement.
= 0.28m3 ÷ 0.0347m3.
= 8.06 = 8 Bags

Therefore 8 bags of cement are required for 1 cubic meter M20 concrete.

We know that 1 bag of cement contains 50 kg.

So the cement quantity in kg = 50 × 8 = 400 kg.

Therefore 400 kg of cement requires for 1 cubic meter of M20 concrete.

Sand required for 1 cubic meter of M20 grade concrete

As we know the mix ratio of M20 concrete is 1:1.5:3. In which 1 part is cement, 1.5 part is sand, and 3 parts is aggregate.

So, sand part in the mix = 1.5/(sum of total proportion)
= 1.5/(1+1.5+3) = 1.5/5.5.

To get the dry volume of concrete we have to multiply in volume by 1.54. Because the dry volume of concrete is always 54% more than the wet volume of concrete.

Dry volume of concrete = Total volume × 1.54.
= 1m3 × 1.54 = 1.54m3.

The volume of sand = sand part in M20 grade concrete mix × 1.54m3.
= 1.5/5.5 × 1.54m3.
= 0.272 × 1.54m3 = 0.42m3.

Now before calculating sand quantity in 1 cubic meter of M20 grade concrete. we have to know the quantity of sand in 1 cubic meter.

Sand Quantity in 1 cubic meter = 1600 kg to 1800 kg.
We assume 1700 kg.

So, the quantity of sand = volume of sand in the mix × 1700 kg.
= 0.42 × 1700 = 714 kg.

Therefore 714 kg sand requires for 1 cubic meter M20 concrete.

Coarse/ Aggregate required for 1 cubic meter of M20 grade concrete

As we know the mix ratio of M20 concrete is 1:1.5:3. In which 1 part is cement, 1.5 part is sand, and 3 parts is aggregate.

So, aggregate part in the mix = 3/(sum of total proportion)
= 1/(1+1.5+3) = 3/5.5.

To get the dry volume of concrete we have to multiply in volume by 1.54. Because the dry volume of concrete is always 54% more than the wet volume of concrete.

Dry volume of concrete = wet volume of concrete × 1.54.
= 1m3 × 1.54 = 1.54m3.

The volume of aggregate = Aggregate part in M20 concrete mix × 1.54m3.
= 3/5.5 × 1.54m3.
= 0.545 × 1.54m3 = 0.84m3.

Now before calculating aggregate quantity in 1 cubic meter of M20 grade concrete. we have to know the quantity of aggregate in 1 cubic meter.

Aggregate Quantity in 1 cubic meter = 1500 kg to 1800 kg.
We assume 1600 kg.

So, the quantity of aggregate = volume of aggregate in the mix × 1700 kg.
= 0.84 × 1700 = 1428 kg.

Therefore 1428 kg Aggregate requires for 1 cubic meter M20 concrete.

Water required for 1 cubic meter M20 grade concrete

According to the thumb rule water require 0.55 to 0.60 ratio of cement weight for M20 concrete.

So the water required water for 1 cubic meter of M20 concrete
= cement weight × water ratio
= 400 × 0.55 = 220 liters.

Therefore 220 liters of water will require for 1 cubic meter of M20 concrete.

Conclusion

Guys in this article we have learned how to calculate how much cement, sand, aggregate is required for 1 cubic meter of M20 concrete. And we find that for 1 cubic meter of M20 grade concrete 400 kg or 8 bags of cement, 714 kg sand, and 1428 kg aggregate require.
