What grade of concrete is used for roof slabs
Generally, M20 grade concrete is used for roof slabs. Because the slab is an important part of any building. In such a situation, it is necessary that good quality of concrete or a standard mix ratio of concrete is used in the slab. It is suggested to use M20 grade concrete for slabs as per IS code 456-2000.
What is M20 grade Concrete?
Concrete is divided into different categories on the basis of its strength and mix ratio. One of those categories is M20 grade where M represents mix ratio and 20 represents compressive strength which is 20N/mm2.
M20 grade concrete has a 1:1.5:3 mix ratio in which 1 part cement, 1.5 parts sand, and 3 parts ballast/ aggregate.
Volume of 1000 sq ft concrete slab
Generally roof slab thickness can be 3 to 5 inches but for this calculation, we consider the roof slab thickness is 4 inches. If we convert 4 inches into feet then we get 4/12.
So the thickness of the roof slab in feet = 4/12
The area of the roof slab is 1000 sq ft.
The wet volume of the roof slab = Area × thickness of the roof slab
= 1000 × 4/12 = 333.333 CFT.
If you want to convert CFT to cubic meters you have to divide by 35.3147 because 1 cubic meter is equal to 35.3147.
The wet volume of concrete in cubic meters = 333.333 /35.3147 = 9.439 m3.
= 9.44 m3.
Dry volume of 1000 sq ft concrete slab
Dry volume is only a mixture of cement, sand, and ballast, this mixture does not have water, due to which there are more voids and pores in it. Therefore, the volume of dry concrete is increased by 54 percent compared to wet concrete.
So we have to multiply by 1.54 in wet volume to get the dry volume of concrete.
Dry volume of concrete = wet volume × 1.54.
= 9.44 m3 × 1.54 = 14.537 m3.
How much Cement required for 1000 sq ft concrete slab
We know that M20 grade concrete is used for slab and M20 grade has 1:1.5:3 mix ratio. So 1 part cement in concrete.
Cement has a fixed density that is 1440 kg/m3.
The total mix proportion is 1+ 1.5 + 3 = 5.5 and part of cement in the mix = 1/5.5
Cement quantity in slab = part of cement in mix × density of cement × dry volume
= (1/5.5) × 1440 kg/m3 × 14.537 m3.
= 3806 kg cement.
Hence, 1 bag of cement has 50 kg. than 3806 / 50 = 76.12 = 76 bags of cement.
Assume the market price of cement is 400 INR for 1 bag of cement.
then, 77 bags of cement price is 76 × 400 = 30400 INR.
How much Sand Required for 1000 sq ft concrete slab
M20 grade concrete is used for slabs and the ratio of sand in M20 grade concrete is 1.5.
The total mix proportion is 1+ 1.5 + 3 = 5.5 and part of the sand in the mix = 1.5 / 5.5.
Sand quantity in slab = part of sand in mix × 1 cubic meter value × dry volume
= (1.5/5.5) × 35.3147 × 14.537 m3.
= 140 CFT.
Assume the market price of sand is 100 INR per CFT.
Then, the 140 CFT sand price is 140 × 100 = 14000 INR.
How much Aggregate Required for 1000 sq ft concrete slab
M20 grade concrete is used for slabs and the ratio of aggregate in M20 grade concrete is 3.
The total mix proportion is 1+ 1.5 + 3 = 5.5 and part of the aggregate in the mix = 3 / 5.5.
Aggregate quantity in slab = part of aggregate in mix × 1 cubic meter value × dry volume
= (3/5.5) × 35.314 × 14.537 m3.
= 280 CFT.
Assume the market price of aggregate is 100 INR per CFT.
Then, the 280 CFT aggregate price is 2800 × 100 = 28000 INR.
How much Steel required for 1000 sq ft concrete roof slab
The most important material for the strength of the roof slab is Rebar and without steel bars, you cannot even imagine a roof slab in today’s times. In the olden days, roof slabs were made by cutting stones, which did not require steel bars But now that has become an old thing. there are two types of steel bars used in the roof slab.
- Main Bar
- Distribution Bar
Bars that are placed in the stress zone and are used to resist bending as well as transfer superimposed load for the slab to the supports are called main bars.
Normally the diameter of the main bar should not be less than 8 mm and the main bar is used at a distance of 4 inches at the bottom of the slab.
The bars which are used to distribute the superimposed load on the main bar and are placed in a one-way slab above the main bar are called distribution bars.
Steel quantity calculation for Roof slab
In general, steel is required in the roof slabs from 0.5% to 1% of the dry volume. When we average 0.5% and 1% we get 0.75% so we will do our calculation at 0.75% only.
We already know steel density is 7850 kg/m3.
Quantity of steel = 0.75% of dry volume × density of steel
= (0.75/100 × 14.537 m3) × 7850 kg/m3.
= 855.86 = 856 kg.
Assume the market price of steel bars is 80 INR per kg.
Then, the 856 kg steel bar price is 856 × 80 = 68480 INR.
What is the Construction cost of 1000 sq ft RCC slab
In the construction of this 1000 sq ft slab, we are not calculating the cost of labor as the labor cost varies from place to place, so we will assume the labor cost as 60,000 in the round figure.
1000 sq ft RCC slab cost = cement cost + sand cost + aggregate cost + steel cost + labor cost.
1000 sq ft RCC slab cost = 30400 + 14000 + 28000 + 68480 + 60000
= 200880 INR.
