These days the use of paver is very common. Because they look promising and give an attractive look to the patios that are covered with it and thus are widely used. We will calculate in this article how many pavers do I need for a 12’×12′ patio.
What is pavers
Pavers are of different dimensions. Paver is made up of different materials that as concrete, brick, stone, and even permeable for eco-friendly projects. The best thing about pavers is they are durable and the patio created by it are very attractive. The pavers come in various colors with a unique design and style. We all have encountered the usage of pavers on walkways, pool decks, footpaths, garden paths, and many more.
Paver blocks made of brick come in different sizes. There are some common rectangular bricks that are often used their dimensions are.
- 4×8 inches
- 6×6 inches
- 8×8 inches
- 12×12 inches
Pavers are also made up of marble and Granite and are very common these days. Their size also varies based on their shapes, some of the most common dimensions are 12×12 inches, 16×16 inches, and 24×24 inches. Their usage can be widely witnessed these days on large patios such as walkways and driveways.
How many pavers do I need for a 12’×12′ patio
How many paver blocks do I need for a 12’×12′ patio it depends upon the size of the pavers. Because pavers come in different sizes. Therefore the number of pavers for a 12’×12′ patio can not be the same. It can be more or less according to the pavers size.
Let’s see how to calculate and know the exact number of pavers needed for a 12’×12′ patio
The Formula for calculating the number of pavers needed for a patio is:
Number of Pavers = Patio area in square feet / Paver size in sq. feet
Let’s break the formula and have a look:
- Measuring the dimension of your patio to determine its area in square feet i.e. (length × width)
- Measuring the square footage of the paver by multiplying its length and breadth in feet.
- Now, divide the total patio area by the square footage of each Paver to find out.
Let’s take different sizes of pavers and calculate and see their numbers:-
So, a 12×12 patio is of total 144 square feet. To know the number of pavers you need to know the size of the selected pavers. Let’s consider a size of 16’×16′ pavers on a 12’×12′ patio, a total of 81 Pavers would needed. Likewise a paver of size 24’×24’on patio 12’×12′.We will need a total of 36 pavers. Taking as we will go on calculating some other paver we can calculate their number too.
How many 6×6 pavers needed for a 12’×12′ patio
To calculate the number of 6×6 pavers for a 12’×12′ patio, we need to
- Calculate the square footage of your patio-
I.e. l×b
l=12, b=12
12’×12’= 144 sq. feet.
- Determine the square footage of each 6×6 Paver. Each Paver is 6 inches by 6 inches, So changing it to square feet, we get
= (6/12) feet × (6/12) feet.
= 0.5 × 0.5 = 0.25 square feet.
Now, divide the total patio area by the square footage of each 6×6 pavers
144 square feet (patio area) ÷ 0.25
= 576 pavers
A total of 576, 6×6 inches sized pavers will be needed to cover a 12’×12′ patio.
NOTE- It would be nice if we add a bit extra number of pavers for breakage or replacement.
How many 4×8 pavers needed for a 12’×12’patio
To calculate the number of 4*8 pavers for 12’×12′ patio, we need to
- Calculate the square footage of your patio-
= I.e. l×b
l=12, b=12
12’×12’ = 144 sq. feet.
- Determine the square footage of each 4×8 Paver. Each Paver is in inches, So changing it to square feet, we get-
= (4/12) feet × (8/12) feet
= 0.333 × 0.666 = 0.222 sq. feet.
Now, divide the total patio area by the square footage of each 4×8 pavers-
144 square feet (patio area) ÷ 0.222 = 648 pavers
A total of 648, 4×8 inch sized Pavers will be needed to cover a 12’×12′ patio.
NOTE – It would be nice if we add a bit extra number of pavers for breakage or replacement.
How many 16×16 pavers needed for a 12’×12′ patio-
To calculate the number of 16×16 inch sized pavers for a 12’×12′ patio, we need to
- Calculate the square footage of your patio-
= I.e. l × b
l=12, b=12
12’×12’ = 144 sq. feet.
- Determine the square footage of each 16 *16 Paver. Each Paver is 16 inches by 16 inches, So changing it to square feet, we get-
(16/12) feet × (16/12) feet = 1.7778 sq.feet.
Now, divide the total patio area by the square footage of each 16*16 pavers-
144 square feet (patio area) ÷ 1.7778 = 80.99 pavers
Since we can’t have a fraction of a paver, we will assume it to be 81 pavers
Hence, A total of 81, 16×16 inch sized Pavers will be needed to cover a 12’×12′ patio.
NOTE – It would be nice if we add a bit extra number of pavers for breakage or replacement.
How many 24×24 pavers needed for a 12’×12′ patio
To calculate the number of 6*6 pavers for a 12’×12′ patio, we need to –
- Calculate the square footage of your patio-
= I.e. l×b
l = 12, b = 12
= 12’×12’ = 144 sq. feet.
- Determine the square footage of each 24 *24 Paver. Each Paver is 24 inches by 24 inches, So changing it to square feet, we get-
= (24/12) feet × (24/12) feet
= 2 feet × 2 feet = 4 sq.feet.
Now, divide the total patio area by the square footage of each 24*24 pavers-
144 square feet (patio area) ÷ 4 = 36 pavers
A total of 36, 24×24 inch sized Paver will be needed to cover a 12’×12’patio.
NOTE- It would be nice if we add a bit extra number of pavers for breakage or replacement.

Conclusion
Similarly in this manner, we can calculate the number of different pavers needed to cover a 12’×12′ patio or of some other dimension to know the exact number of pavers.
As mentioned above a few extra pavers always add to the good numbers as they are useful for any breakage or future replacement.
