To construct the roof slab cement, sand, aggregate, and steel are the main ingredients and these ingredients cover 70% cost of the total cost. Therefore If you want to construct the roof slab then you have to know the Required material for 1000 sq ft slab. In this article, I will teach you how to calculate Cement, sand, Aggregate, and steel required for 1000 sq ft roof slab.
These are some important things that you should have to keep in mind during constructing the roof slab.
- In the roof slab always use at least 8mm steel bar
- M20 grade concrete should use in the roof slabs in which the mix ratio is 1:1.5:3. But generally for roof slabs 1:2:3 mix ratio is used.
- Roof slab thickness should be between 4 inches to 6 inches for residential buildings.
Required Cement, sand, aggregate, and steel quantity for 1000 sq ft roof slab
To calculate cement, sand, aggregate, and steel quantity in the roof slab. We have to calculate the roof volume first. And to calculate roof slab volume we must know the thickness of the slab and area of the slab.
Let’s assume the thickness of the slab is 5 inches.
And, given roof slab area = 1000 sq ft.
Wet Volume of roof slab = area × thickness of the slab
= 1000 × 5/12 ( because 12 inches = 1 feet.)
= 5000 ÷ 12 = 416.666 cubic feet
Now, we will convert it into cubic meter
So, we know that 1 cubic meter is equal to 35.314 cubic feet.
Therefore, 416.666 ÷ 35.314 =11.798 This is the wet volume of concrete.
Now, we will calculate dry volume of concrete, and to calculate the dry volume we have to multiply by 1.54 into we volume of concrete.
Dry volume of concrete = 1.54 × wet volume of concrete
= 1.54 × 11.798 = 18.168 cubic meter.
Required Cement quantity for 1000 sq ft roof slab
1:1.5:3 (M20 grade) or 1:2:3 mix ratio of concrete is generally used for roof slabs. But most commonly 1:2:3 mix ratio of concrete is used for roof slabs, in which 1 part is cement, 2 parts is sand, and 3 parts are aggregate. We will also use the 1:2:3 mix ratio for this calculation.
To know how much cement quantity is needed for 1000 sq ft roof slab. First of all, we have to know the cement volume in concrete. And to calculate cement volume in concrete volume we have to divide in concrete volume by the sum of total mix ratio.
The density of cement = 1440 kg/m3.
Now, the sum of the total mix ratio = 1+ 2 + 3 = 6.
Cement volume = dry volume of concrete ÷ Sum of total mix ratio
= 18.168 ÷ 6
= 3.028 cubic meters.
Required cement quantity for 1000 sq ft roof slab in kg = volume of cement × density of cement.
= 3.028 × 1440
= 4360.32 = 4360 kg.
4360 kg cement will require for 1000 square feet 5-inch thick roof slab. We know that 1 bag of cement contains 50 kg cement.
So, the number of cement bags required for 1000 sq ft slab = 4360 ÷ 50
= 87.2 = 87 bags.
Therefore 87 bags of cement are required for 1000 sq ft 5-inch thick roof slab.
Cement cost for 1000 sq ft roof slab
Assume market of cement = 400 rupees per bag. (This price can changed, according to place any many other factor)
So, 400 × 87 = 34800 Rupees.
Required Sand quantity for 1000 sq ft roof slab
We already know the cement volume for 1000 sq ft roof slab is 3.028 cubic meters. According to mix ratio sand volume will 2 times of cement volume.
So, Sand volume for 1000 sq ft roof slab = 2 × cement volume.
= 2 × 3.028 = 6.056 cubic meter.
Generally sand quantity measured in Cubic feet and 1 cubic meter is equal to 35.3147.
So, required Sand quantity for 1000 sq ft slab in CFT = Sand volume × 35.3147
= 6.056 × 35.3147
= 213.86 = 214 cubic feet.
214 CFT sand required for 1000 sq ft 5-inch thick roof slab.
Sand cost for 1000 sq ft roof slab
Assume the market price of 1 CFT sand = 50 Rupees. (This price can change, according to place and many other factor)
So, 214 × 50 = 10700 Rupees.
Required Aggregate quantity for 1000 sq ft roof slab
We already know the cement volume for 1000 sq ft roof slab is 3.028 cubic meters. According to mix ratio aggregate volume will 3 times of cement volume.
So, Aggregate volume for 1000 sq ft roof slab = 3 × cement volume.
= 3 × 3.028 = 9.084 m3.
Generally, Aggregate quantity measured in Cubic feet and 1 cubic meter is equal to 35.3147.
So, the required aggregate quantity for 1000 sq ft slab in CFT = aggregate volume × 35.3147
= 9.084 × 35.3147
= 320.79 = 321 cubic feet.
321 CFT Aggregate required for 1000 sq ft 5-inch thick roof slab.
Aggregate cost for 1000 sq ft roof slab
Assume a market price of 1 CFT aggregate = 70 Rupees. (This price can changed, according to place any many other factor)
So, 321 × 70 = 22470 Rupees.
Required Steel quantity for 1000 sq ft roof slab
According to the thumb rule 0.5% to 1% steel required for roof slab. But we will take the average of 0.5% and 1%, which is 0.75%.
Steel density = 7850 kg/m3.
Steel quantity for 1000 sq ft slab in kg = Steel volume × dry concrete volume × steel density.
= 0.75/100 × 18.168 × 7850
= 106964.1 ÷ 100 = 1069.641 kg.
1069.641 if we will rounding it we will get 1070 kg.
So, 1070 steel will required for 1000 sq ft roof slab. This is the only roof slab steel quantity, slab beam steel quantity is not included in it.
Steel cost for 1000 sq ft roof slab
Assume market price of 1kg steel = 70 Rupees. (This price can changed, according to place any many other factor)
So, 1070 × 70 = 74900 Rupees.
Total material of 1000 sq ft roof slab = Cement cost + Sand cost + Aggregate cost + Steel cost.
= 34800 + 10700 + 22470 + 74900
= 142870 Rupees.
142870 is the total material cost of 1000 sq ft roof slab.
